The Walking Dead Recap

The Walking Dead
“Home”

Now that was an episode! The Walking Dead returns to form after a slow start with guns a-blazing courtesy of The Governor and his lackeys. Last week The Grimes Gang took the fight to the prison to save Daryl, only to see Daryl walk off into the sunset with his brother Merle. This week, the Governor returns the favor, devastating the safety of the prison and taking out a cast member. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
(Spoilers ahead)
I knew something was up as soon as Milton lied to Andrea about where the governor was at, but did I expect them to create chaos at the prison with only a handful of fighters (I only counted three men with The Governor, Martinez, Black Daryl and tower sniper guy)? No. The Governor decimated the group’s mental state with the assault and the happiness on his face shows no fear. I think before he lost his daughter The Governor could play the politician and the killer, but now that she’s gone, the humanity has been wiped from his eyeless brow. He needs Andrea to become that personable leader to keep everyone calm, while he and his team handle the bloody business outside the walls of Woodbury. I liked how at the end of the fight the Governor was even shooting at The Grimes Gang, he was just continually firing to draw more walkers to the area.
Prior to the assault on the prison we saw Rick falling deeper into his own madness and Glen hulking out. But luckily, wise, old Herschel was around to help them both. We also saw the first episode of The Walking Dixons, which followed the loveable redneck racists save a family of Mexican decent from a group of zombies. Daryl thought he heard a baby cry (glad to see other babies exist), Merle said it was some raccoons fucking, then they heard the shots. Although Merle didn’t want to help, Daryl sprung into hero mode and saved the family. When Merle began looting their car for a reward, Daryl wasn’t having it and put his crossbow to Merle’s head. A fight between the brothers commenced in Merle seeing scars on Daryl’s back, which were exactly like the ones on Merle’s back. Daryl headed back to the prison, leaving his old family behind for his new family.
Carol and Axel were having a nice chat in the yard when all of sudden a bullet strikes Axel in the head, spraying Carol with blood. The assault begins and The Grimes Gang runs around like a chicken with its head cut off. During the governors attack, Rick was stuck outside the fence and after running out of bullets, it seemed two zombies were going to overpower our hero, but luckily, an arrow pierced the skull and Daryl had arrived just in time to save the leader. And surprise, Merle was right there with him killing zombies and saving Rick. And then the one of the coolest sequences the show has ever done blew up right in front of our eyes. Suddenly, a work truck comes barreling down the road knocking open the two outside gates of the prison, the truck stops in the yard, everyone stops firing and all is quiet for what seemed like minutes. As everyone stares at the truck in puzzlement, the back door kicks open and a plethora of zombies come strolling out the back… Holy shit the show just created a zombie bomb or better yet a Biter Bomb. A driver covered from head to emerged from the truck and escaped before the chaos ensued (who was it?). Herschel was stuck in the yard and the zombies started charging, but luckily he made up with Glen earlier in the episode and he showed up just in time to save him. The end of the episode sees The Grimes Gang on one side of the fence and Rick/Daryl/Merle on the other and a whole slew of zombies in between.

Random thoughts

I like how Michonne has taken up residence in a turned over prison bus. Classy.

We found out something Michonne is not good at… shooting a gun.

Daryl had easily the zombie kill of the season, if not the series when he smashed the trunk door down on the zombie’s head. So gory and so good!

Rip Axel. I always thought you were lying about your crimes and figured you were going to turn out to be a serial killer. But I guess I was wrong.

Quote of the week goes to Merle when responding to Daryl’s thoughts on scavenging through some houses they saw… “Is that something your Sheriff Rick taught you? To loot for booty?”

Speaking of Merle, it’ll be interesting to see how he gets along in the prison. I have a feeling he’ll die saving someone or helping the group out, totally redeeming his racist ass and showing his baby brother he wasn’t all that bad.

The Following Recap

The Following
“Mad Love”

The Following is an odd show that tries too hard. Sure, the series is almost a remake of “Silence of the Lambs” starring Kevin Bacon, but fans should want more than that, and unfortunately, they’re not getting it. Luckily, there isn’t much else on Monday nights (“Revolution” where are you?) to watch, so I continue to tune in even if I’m not that interested.
If you’ve never seen the show the story follows former FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Bacon), who after catching serial killer Joe Carol (James Purefoy), is injured and retires. He writes a book about his hunt for the killer and also starts dating Carol’s wife Claire (Natalie Zea). Years later, Carol escapes and Hardy is brought back into the fold to help the FBI capture the killer, which they do… IN THE FIRST EPISODE!!!!
I get the show, created by Kevin Williamson of “Dawson’s Creek” fame, wants to draw out the storyline as Joe Carol has a number of dimwitted minions who are continuing his work including kidnapping his young son. Catching Carol immediately is a problem because he is the most charismatic character on the show and after the first episode; he basically becomes a background player. We’re left with Hardy chasing after six followers (there has to be more than six members to this cult, right?) who each offer a creepy trait, but can’t carry the fear. Truthfully, the only minion I’ve enjoyed was the Rick, who dressed in the Edgar Allen Poe (that’s who the cult follows) outfit and poured gas on a man in the street, engulfing him in flames.
This week’s episode follows the aftermath of killing Rick as his wife Maggie escapes and captures Ryan’s sister. Ryan must trade his life for his sister and almost bites the dust as Maggie places a number of electronic devices around Ryan’s pacemaker (Carol stabbed him in the heart, so now he’s a drunk who wears a pacemaker). But luckily, Ryan’s guardian angel, also known as wide-eyed, gung-ho rookie agent Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore, who gives it his all), shows up in the nick of time and kills Maggie. Another week and another cult member dead.

Random Thoughts

You’d think that a successful serial killer like Joe Carol could find better followers, but it appears he enjoys the company of idiots.

No water bottle (he tries to hid his vodka in a water bottle) this week for Hardy. Has he turned a new sober leaf?

Actress Natalie Zea must be attracted to dangerous men with badges as she not only pines for Ryan Hardy on “The Following,” but she is also carrying Raylan Givens baby on “Justified”

Is anyone even watching this show?

Happy birthday!!

Happy birthday to Christina Ricci who turns 33 today... You've grown up quite nice over the years, but you'll never be as sexy/trashy as you were in "Black Snake Moan"

The Walking Dead Recap

The Walking Dead
“The Suicide King”

The Walking Dead kicks off the second part of the third season right where it left off with Daryl Dixon facing off against his brother Merle in the Woodbury Arena. And although I doubt anybody thought one of the Dixon brothers would die tonight, it set up another attack by Rick and The Grimes Gang on Woodbury, adding more fuel to the Governor’s one-eyed fire. At the prison, Carl, Herschel, Herschel’s hot daughter, Axel and Carol deal with the four new visitors including Tyreese, offering small talk and back-story. This is the slowest part of the episode, but creators must introduce characters and develop motives within the small group.
Rick and The Grimes Gang returns to a beaten Glen with Merle and all hell breaks loose as Daryl decides to leave the group and join forces with his brother. It’s a risky move separating a fan favorite like Daryl from the main narrative, but I can only assume the Dixons will be picked up by the Governor. Or maybe the producers have come up with the greatest spinoff in the history of spinoffs — "The Walking Dixons" — following two badass brothers wreaking havoc across a zombie-infested wasteland. If that’s the case, count me in!
While the people of Woodbury are in panic mode trying to leave the secure town, a few walkers get in the perimeter and attack a citizen. Andrea ultimately calms everyone down providing her a purpose in the town and a tough decision later in the season when she reunites with The Grimes Gang.
And of course we have Rick going crazy at the end of the episode. The poor guy has taken the burden for all of the groups problems and as he slowly continues to crack, it’ll be interesting to see how long everyone continues to follow. The problem is, without Daryl in the group, who becomes the leader? Glenn? Herschel? Carl?  I guess only time will tell.

Random Thoughts

Is Beth making a move for the Queen Bee spot? She’s an obvious choice to take care of the baby, but how about that smooch she laid on Rick when he returned? At least she knows who the dominant male is.

And speaking of romance, are Carol and Axel falling in love?

Merle called Michonne his “Nubian Queen.” Some people might hate Merle, but I love that racist son of a bitch.

I like how the Governor is pissed at himself for cuddling the residences of Woodbury - “These people have had it too good. Picnics and barbecues. That ends now.”

Tyreese explains the state of the world in one sentence – “The longer you stay out there, the less human you become.”

What did you guys think of the episode?

Evil Dead in 60 seconds?

A group of people banded together and created a 60 second remake of the "Evil Dead" for a film festival... it's pretty good. Hopefully the hollywood remake will be as good!

Arnold vs. Sly

Before

After

Although it's 2013, I had Deja Vu earlier this year when 80s action icons Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger released new films a few weeks a part. On Jan. 18 Schwarzenegger's newest action extravaganza "The Last Stand" opened to decent reviews and on Feb. 1, Stallone debuted his newest film, "Bullet to the Head," which opened to not so decent reviews.

Both films weren't great, but out of the two, I enjoyed "Bullet to the Head" better because it was darker and more serious than "The Last Stand,"plus it had Christian Slater hotting and hollering and a pretty convincing bad guy played by Jason Momoa. The film got an extra bonus for bringing Sarah Shahi (sooo hot!!!) into the mix.

I expected to enjoy "The Last Stand" more because it was the first american film for director Jee-woon Kim, who made the ridiculously good "I Saw The Devil," but I was disappointed. Not only does the old man Schwarzenegger stick grow thin quick, but Johnny Knoxville irritated me throughout. If you're nostalgic for the 80s, then check both of these out... but if you only choose, I'd take a bullet from Stallone.

"The Last Stand" - 2 stars
Rated R, 107 minutes

"Bullet to the Head"- 3 stars
Rated R, 92 minutes

Some friends and I hit this up in September and it was awesome! You basically cruise around downtown Des Moines and make a stop at the bars you want. It was a lot of fun and suggest everyone to get a group together and hit the town!!
Just ask for Dave, he'll hook you up!

Here's a few pics I took

Bill Hader rules

Bill Hader is the best part of SNL!!! Dance With Me!

Top films of 2012

I usually watch around 100 movies a year and 2012 was no exception. I watched a lot of movies and even though there were a few I didn't get to see (Argo, The Master, Zero Dark Thirty), I still think I came up with a pretty good top 10. Sure, some of these films would be laughed at by the academy, but I don't go to the movies for prestige, I go for excitement!! If you haven't seen any of these films I would highly suggest finding them

1. Looper - Rian Johnson's sci-fi/action adventure masterpiece blew me away in theaters, which is why it sets atop my list.

2. Cabin in the Woods - The best horror film in years pokes fun at the rules and offers horror fans a blood soaked finale. Fucking merman!!

3. Django Unchained - Quentin Tarantino pulls out all the stops with this homage to spaghetti westerns and blaxploitation films. Although Christoph Waltz got the Oscar nomination, Samuel L. Jackson is the nastiest character in the film and should have been recognized.

4. Moonrise Kingdom - Wes Anderson returns with another Wes Anderson film and as usual, I loved it.  Great cast, great locations, great music... now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna find a tree to chop down.

5. The Grey - People have offered mixed reactions to The Grey, but I left eh theater with my blown at the amazing film I just experienced. The loud ferocious crash of the plane, the ice cold wind whipping through the air and the haunting howls of the wolves following our stranded travelers had me wrapped up in the film. And that ending was fantastic!!!

6. Sound of My Voice - I fell head over heels with Brit Marling with the quite sci-fi film "Another Earth," but I heard the second film she debuted at Sundance the same year, "Sound Of My Voice," was better. The rumors were right, "Sound of My Voice" is a tale of two investigative film makers who infiltrate a cult in the valley and discover there leader, Maggie (Marling), claims to be form the future.

7. Lawless - Forget the Batman villain Bane, if you really want to see Tom Hardy be a bad ass in a movie this year, check out "Lawless." The story of three brothers in the bootlegging business comes to life thanks to the outstanding cast and the direction of John Hillcoat.

8. Goon - Who knew "Goon" would be this good? A down on his luck bouncer (Seann William Scott) is recruited to be the bruiser on a low level hockey team. But when his fighting skills bring him popularity, he joins a minor league division where he must trade blows with an iconic Goon (Liev Schreiber) who isn't to fond of the up-and-comer.

9. Killer Joe - The film has the craziest scene I'm watched in years and you'll never look at KFC or Gina Gershon the same way ever again.

10. Safety Not Guaranteed - A small independent film about a group of reporters who follow a story about a man who claims to have been to the future and is placing want ads for a travel companion on his next journey.

Back in the saddle again...

It's been a long time coming, but the blog is finally up! After taking a break from writing, i'm going to try and get back in the swing of things with this low-level blog you see before you. I'm going to try and post a few things everyday — my own ramblings as well as other cool stuff I find on the interweb — so check back often for my opinions on everything pop culture related including a heavy dose of opinion on TV shows and movies. thanks for stopping at the sight and I hope you enjoy what you see!
